Previously taught at the University of Hull and visiting fellowship at the London School of Economics. Ongoing visiting academic fellow at the Hansard Society. Deputy Editor of the Journal of Legislative Studies, and editorial team member, British Journal of Politics and International Relations, also co-editor of Developments in British Politics (Palgrave). Co-convenor of the Political Studies Association’s Specialist Group on Elections, Public Opinion and Parties. Author or editor of seven books and more than 60 academic articles and chapters, primarily on parliament, including Conscience and Parliament (ed, London: Frank Cass, 1998), Revolts and Rebellions: Parliamentary Voting Under Blair (London: Politico’s, 2002), and The Rebels: How Blair Mislaid His Majority (Politico’s, 2005). A regular commentator on British TV and Radio – including being Radio 4’s election night analyst – he has also written on British politics for the Guardian, The Times, the Independent, and the New Statesman amongst others. He was appointed vice-chair of the Government’s Youth Citizenship Commission in 2008, and from August 2008-May 2009 is working in the Government Social Research Unit at the Treasury, engaging academics and policy-makers
