Public Affairs in Practice

Dates:
Tuesday 2nd December

Course Programme:

Working in three teams, masterclass students will be placed in a public affairs scenario based on a real, current piece of proposed legislation at the early Bill or pre-legislative consultation stage of the Whitehall/Westminster process.

The game’s narrative will be driven and its challenges established through the use of fake communications and role-play scenarios created by ComKnow staff and other invited experts, e.g. news releases, telephone inquiries, press conferences.

Teams can be 2 to 6 members strong, up to a maximum of 18 overall players, evenly distributed.

  • Team 1: opposes key measures in the proposed legislation and is seeking to have them amended or removed.
  • Team 2: is in favour of the legislation and is seeking to support its passage, intact, through the parliamentary process.
  • Team 3: is a potential third-party advocate for either team 1 or team 2 and must decide why and in which ways it will campaign alongside either of those teams.

Each team will be assigned a public affairs expert to observe their tasks (and the preparation for them) and score them out of ten on

  • Teamwork
  • Creativity
  • Political knowledge

The teams themselves will also set three public affairs aims for each task at each stage and the judges will also score them out of ten as to their “imagined” success at the end.

Overall judgment will balance out three factors:

  1. Ambition
  2. Relevancy
  3. The extent to which they are likely to have been achieved
